“The role of the artist is exactly the same as the role of the lover. If I love you, I have to make you conscious o the things you don’t see.”

-James Baldwin

“Now keep in mind that I’m an artist, and I’m sensitive about my shit.”

-Erykah Badu

When I write, I like to be relatable. I want people to be able to see themselves in my work, hear their stories through my work, overcome trials and declare triumph through my work. I want people to laugh when they hear my work after wiping their tears of a hard day. I want people to be like, “Damn, I was there now look where I’m at.” I want people to be like, “Damn, he went through what I’m going through, I can make it too!” I just wanna write poems that will be quotable like Maya, James, Nikki, Shakespeare, Essex. I wanna write poems.

I wanna write poems that make people feel good

Poems that make people in the hood and the suburbs can relate too

Poems that you dedicate to;

People you love so much

You can’t put it into your own words

So; you use somebody else’s.

I wanna write poems to change someone’s mind

(Not to brainwash)

But to shift paradigms

(Not pollute)

But to share my expertise through my experience .

I want my poems to be an experience

Like your first bike ride

Like your first kiss

Like your first time

Like your… first heartbreak

Like your… first death in the family.

I wanna write poems that’ll make you laugh

That’ll make you cry

That’ll make you cringe

That’ll make you think

I wanna write poems that make you say

“Damn, that’s fucked up.”

That’ll make you say

“Damn, I’m fucked up.”

That’ll make you say

I wanna write poems that other people see themselves writing and reciting.

I wanna write poems for people who can’t speak for themselves

(Just yet)

Because their voice is

Yet, my poems give them confidence that once they find THEIR VOICE

MY poems,

I want them to be treated like maps.

I want my poems to give you a sense of direction

(Because of where I’ve been)

I want my poems to show you how I got here like the bible.

Show you how I got here like The Big Bag Theory

Show you how I got here like hieroglyphics

I want my poems to grow so old

They’ll have their own throwbacks.

It’s crazy to believe I still have the notebook I wrote my first poem in

Yea, my poems are that good.

I mean, that important to me.

My poems tell the stories of many

(Not just me)

Believe me; My poems have brought me many things.

Friends and lovers

Abundance and boundaries

Blessings and faith

Talent and passion

My poems gave me understanding of my purpose

My poems, hold me accountable to the words I speak.

I poems were once thoughts

Just as today was someone’s dream to see

Just as today will be a memory

Yea, remember me

But don’t forget my poems.
